Ingredients
- 1 lb. sweet butter
- 6 tablespoons toasted almonds, chopped very fine (optional)
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 4 cups sifted flour
- 1 egg yolk
- 3 cups sifted powdered sugar
- 1 jigger of whiskey
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
Instructions
Beat butter and sugar until creamy, about 15 minutes. Add egg yolk, flavorings, and almonds, beating until well-blended. Remove from beater, and gradually add sifted flour to make a soft dough.
Pinch off pieces and shape carefully into various designs, crescent, round, etc. Place on ungreased baking sheet pan 1 inch apart. Bake in oven at 350℉ for 20 minutes or until slightly browned. Allow to cool slightly before removing from baking sheet. Carefully place on a flat surface, which has been sprinkled with powdered sugar. Sprinkle powdered sugar over cookies. Cool. Makes 5 dozen
WARNING – PREPARE TO HAVE POWDERED SUGAR EVERYWHERE
These cookies are super messy to make but they are always a staple in a Greek Holiday house or any day for that matter. This recipe was passed to me in a Greek cookbook made by the members of our church ladies society called the Philoptochos. They are a philanthropic group whose mission is to help people in need. They have sponsored many programs throughout America for over 90 years.
